PITTSBURGH, PA— University Assistant Professor Bing Liu was found dead in his townhouse this past Saturday. Liu had been ‘shot in his neck, head, torso and extremities in an apparent murder-suicide’, ABC7.com reported.
Liu was researching the COVID-19 virus which has been wreaking havoc in the United States and the world.
“The university issued a statement saying it is “deeply saddened by the tragic death of Bing Liu, a prolific researcher and admired colleague at Pitt.
“The University extends our deepest sympathies to Liu’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
“Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications,” his colleagues at the university’s Department of Computational and Systems Biology said in a statement.
ABC7 Eyewitness News posted the story to their Twitter account.
“Professor researching COVID-19 was shot and killed in apparent murder-suicide, officials say”
The post received several comments with people weighing in with their theories, like from Millertime,
“He must’ve been getting way too close to the truth….”
Esher Bozar tweeted,
“You can just smell the cover up from all this”
“Oh ok got it. And the case is closed! A Chinese professor working on COVID19 was shot and killed. Hmmm”
“Sure as shit doesn’t pass the smell test. This is really weird.”
This is a tragedy. I think Liu might have helped to find cure for this killer virus.
Liu was highly respected by his colleagues. They have vowed to complete his research “in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence,” ABC7 also reported.
A statement by the Ross Township Police Department was posted to their Facebook page which read:
“Our investigation of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Bing Lu and Hao Gu indicates that the actions that took place on Saturday May 2, 2020, was the result of a lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner.
“We have found zero evidence that this tragic event has anything to do with employment at the University of Pittsburgh, any work being conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and the current health crisis affecting the United States and the world.
“Due to the fact that the individuals involved are not United States citizens and in accordance with long-standing protocol, our review has been forwarded to federal authorities.
